Wapiti Lake Wolf Pack vs Bull Bison in Yellowstone National Park
One of my Yellowstone photo workshop groups was in for a rare treat in January 2024 when we witnessed the Wapiti Lake Wolf Pack take down a bull bison along the Firehole River from just 100 yards away.
For 10+ hours, this bison staved off the wolf pack as long as he could before he desperately jumped into the river. He remained in the water until he died.
We were fortunate to capture this scene all on video, and we hope it proves to be helpful for future research of wolves within Yellowstone’s ecosystem.

My team and I are often fortunate enough to spot them during my Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica photo workshops. But, there's a difference between spotting them and capturing a timeless image of these macaws in flight. During this video, I'm sharing my suggestions on how to familiarize...

At last, someone who knows how to explain things. It's unbelievable how often I come across UA-camrs who make changing something on a camera more like a dive into quantum mechanics rather than a simple menu alteration......thank you. 🙂
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺
Increíble 🙌 Amazing!
It is sad to see the bull go like that but it’s just as sad to see the wolves licking and biting away at any meat or flesh they get. It’s the circle of life and the bull would’ve probably died the next month if he was doing that poorly. That would’ve been amazing to see! And good luck on your journeys!
astonishing
That's a huge pack of hungry dogs.
Why do the wolves go straight for the butt?
They go for the family jewelry. Softest area. They keep tearing at it. You see all blood. This guy is dinner.
And not only that but its the hardest for them to get hit at because once the bull is so tired kicking is useless so their horns are their best defense so they will have a much harder time using that defense if they’re attacking from behind!
Congratulations Juan, you deserve this once in a lifetime viewing
great. I am happy that you continue to enjoy your favourite place!
Wow. That should be a super exciting experience. I wish to have experience something like that and share in my UA-cam channel 🙂 So how did it end? Is bison alive still?
The Bison died that night and by the morning the carcass was picked pretty much clean.
Absolutely Incredible!! Wow 👏👏
4 year old video, still good as gold today. Thanks a ton man!
i realize this is 4 yrs old but i also heard that the processor in the a9 ii is a little faster and the color science is better with the a9 ii.
Thanks Juan. You are a great teacher. I found this to be very helpful. Keep up the good work. I am glad I came across your page on the youtube.
I got a 200-600mm f5.6~6.3 zoom on a Sony A7sIII and ever since I carried I took it off the tripod and have been hand carrying it, I notice an ever so so slight play between the lens and the camera body. Wondering if you could corroborate. So when the lens is attached it snaps into place but then if I wiggle the mammoth 200-600 lens there is slight movement-ish (if that is a word) in the flange between the body and lens - very very slight. Pictures seem fine! I put the 24mm f1.4 Gmaster lens and can feel it with that as well, but much less so than with the 200-600 where it is more pronounced. Again, not sure it is a problem but never experienced this with any other camera brand - my first Sony body. Feels like the lens moves a tiny tiny bit where the white dot is on the lens. Again, I went back and put on the 24mm after I noticed it on the 200-600 and it was there at the shorter focal length. Something I had never noticed before!
Im using a A6400 with 75-350 lens for birdwatching now, but looking for a lens upgrade. So need a pro tip to decide between these two. Right now the crop help me a lot; but some day I will switch to a full frame also.
This is one of the best videos anyone can watch for this comparison
too much of talking
Crystal clear presentation! Thank you
Boy, you missed so many more features the a9II have. Shutter curtain for one, very important for those who change lenses on the field.
Great insight into a camera I've seriously been looking at. I presently use the A7IV & happy to use with some of my best keeping rate since moving from Nikon, The Z6ii just didn't cut it for me so sold all my Nikon gear and came to Sony, now going to upgrade to the A1 , Thanks again... Keep up the great reviews .....
Awesome video, what are your min and max ISO settings?
I set my Sony cameras to a Minimum of 100 and a Maximum of 12,800
@@JuanPons thank you sir, stay safe
Do you set up this settings on Manual?
Very helpful thanks a lot
thank you,I just got my Sony A7R4. I am thrilled about it. Great video.
ok, what about the a7iv not R ?
Thank you for all the infos it really helped
Good video sharing brother
J and J, thanks for the suggestions for improvement!!
Merci !
This is a well done video!! Very well explain settings!! (Coming from canon r5.)
Thanks Juan. Great video. Your doing Sony's job making the A7R4 more manageble. Sony could win more hearts and souls i.m.o. through updating the menu once more by firmware.
Watching this now, aren't you glad the A1 came out.. haha
Watching this 2 years later, the wildlife photographers dream camera has come true with the Alpha 1
Does Sony a7rivA works better a A7riv?
👏👏👏👏
Great review session as always! Thanks very much for offering so many helpful comments on all of the submissions.
Sorry I missed the live session. Good comments on my Bosque cranes image, thanks Juan and Jaclyn!
Juan very informative thank you. ;^D AU
Always enjoy these and learn a few things. Thank you!
Superb video. You helped me make my decision!
Love these image reviews. I learn a lot and agree with your recommendations.
Juan, I have the 100-400 and use for my kids sports events, is one of my favorite lens, it is not too heady and I took some amazing pics with it , all merit of my gear, A7RIV with this lens is great because I can crop on post really good action shots.....
Hi Juan, this is by far the most useful video I came across for my camera, you explained things that wanted to know and ould not find easly the answer, I will check the remaining series on custom settings, congrats .......
Simply the best Wildlife Camera on the market at the moment in my opinion ! Awesome review Juan ! 👍😍
Hi. Great video. Looking to get into wildlife and BIF photography. I’m have an A7R2 and have the 100-400 GM with a 1.4 TC. Looking to add a 200-600 in the future. I used an A6400 and 200-600 in the past but found that combo hard to use for long periods. I’m planning to sell the R2 unless it makes sense to keep in combination with my next camera. For example the R2 is still and amazing landscape camera. Should I pick up an A7R3, A7R4 or an A9? The A7R3a with an extra battery can be had new for $2k and the A7RIVa for $3k. I’m guess the A1 would be the best solution but I can’t spend $6400 at this time. Thanks.
Hi, My recommendation out of the cameras you mentioned would be the a7R4, the R3 AF system is really not up to tracking wildlife. I would also consider the newly released a74, great AF (better than the a7R4) good sensor and resolution. The big advantage of the a7R4 is the 60 megapixels which is great to crop into the images when you need that extra reach which you always seem to with wildlife. Best of luck!
@@JuanPons Thank you! I really appreciate the response. Should I just bite the bullet and get in get the A1? Or is there a legitimate two camera solution? E.g., A7R4 and A74? Also if you had to pick only one not including the A1, what would you choose if buying today?
The images aren't as sharp and detailed as my Canon 5dsr. I own the Alpha 1 as well. Most likely the difference is because the Sony has an AA filter (although many people think it doesn't!) and the Canon doesn't. The Sony kills the Canon for dynamic range, however.
All images require a certain level of sharpening in post processing, so while I have not seen the difference you mention, that would not bother since I would apply selective sharpening in post that would make any difference between the two a non-issue.
Applying Sharpening is not quite as good as having an intrinsically sharper file due to the lack of a blur filter. You won't always be able to see the difference at common output sizes however. You can't actually sharpen a photo, what we call sharpenig is a trick with edge contast to fool our brains, as you're probably aware. There are quit a few photographers who don't sharpen photos because they haven't been made blurry in the first place. !
@@njrtech The A1 has an AA filter and the DSR doesn't. That makes the sharpness difference. The Sony is superior in all other regards but not sharpness. The comparisons are using the same lens.
Try CP1
What tripod is that.
I use the Really Right stuff TVC-24L Mk2 bhpho.to/2N82SJb
Prograde does make A cards as well now
yes, and they are cheaper specially when you buy the 2 pack!
